I resisted printing for years. Screens were easier, cheaper and endlessly forgiving. Then a gallerist asked me for a 60 by 80 centimetre print of a picture I thought I knew, and I discovered I did not.
Paper changes the picture
On a matte cotton rag the shadows in that image opened up in a way no screen had shown me. I reprinted it three times before it looked like the thing I remembered seeing.
Every print in the shop is now made the same way: one paper, one printer, signed and numbered on the back.
