Why I still shoot film in 2026

On slowness, cost per frame, and the discipline of not looking at the back of the camera.

The frame you cannot check

Every roll of medium-format film gives me ten frames. Ten decisions, ten moments where I have to commit before I know what I have. Digital removed that pressure, and with it, for me, most of the attention.

I am not nostalgic about grain or colour. I am nostalgic about the way a limited budget of frames forces you to look longer before you press anything.

What it costs

A single roll, developed and scanned, costs about the same as a good lunch. On a three-day editorial that adds up, and it is a line I put on every estimate. Clients rarely push back once they have seen the contact sheets.
